A disorganized kitchen doesn’t just create clutter — it slows down every meal you make and adds low-level stress to your day. We sat down with Gigi Miller, founder of Atlanta-based Vision Organizing, for her five-step approach to a kitchen that actually functions well.
Step 1: Declutter and Purge
Take everything out of your cabinets, drawers, and pantry. All of it. This is the only way to see exactly what you’re working with.
- Go through each item: Do I use this? Is it in good condition? Do I genuinely need it? Be ruthless.
- Donate or discard anything that doesn’t pass the test.
- Check for expired food in the pantry and refrigerator and dispose of it properly.
Step 2: Categorize and Create Zones
Group similar items together into functional zones: baking supplies, spices, pots and pans, snacks. Zones make finding things faster, unpacking groceries easier, and meal prep quicker.
Gigi’s go-to zones: baking, breakfast, snacks, dinner, and nuts.
Step 3: Maximize Storage Space
Most kitchens have more storage capacity than they appear to. A few investments that pay off quickly:
- Drawer dividers and organizers for utensils and cutlery
- Cabinet shelf organizers to use vertical space
- Pull-out pantry shelves for reaching items at the back
- Lazy Susans for corner cabinets
- Under-cabinet hooks for pots, pans, and utensils
Step 4: Label and Contain
- Use clear containers and bins so you can see contents without pulling things out.
- Label everything — it helps the whole family know where to find things and where to put them back.
- Store bulk items like rice, pasta, and flour in airtight containers to keep them fresh and prevent pests.
Invest in a uniform set of clear containers. They look clean and eliminate the open-every-lid problem. The visual difference is bigger than you’d expect.
Step 5: Regular Maintenance
Organization isn’t a one-time project — it’s a habit. Revisit your kitchen periodically and adjust as your cooking habits, diet, or equipment change. A quarterly check-in is usually enough to keep things from sliding back.
“My philosophy is based on simplifying spaces, prioritizing time, and creating boundaries in work and life — so clients can clear the physical and mental clutter and make space for what they genuinely care about.”
